Gemstones, jewels and crystals have been used as symbols, charms and talismans throughout history. Birthstones are a popular example that to this day is observed by many either as part of their beliefs, superstitions, religions, customs and traditions or even just for the fun and beauty.
The Traditional birthstone list can be traced back to the Foundation Stones as described in the New Testament Bible, in the book of Revelations. The 12 Foundation Stones symbolize the 12 apostles. These Foundation stones in turn can be traced back to the Old Testament Bible, in the book of Exodus, where the breastplate of High Priest of Israelites contained 12 stones. The 12 stones represented the 12 tribes of Israel. These in turn were linked to the 12 months of the year.
There are many different birthstone lists, some of them having long histories such as the Traditional Month Birthstones, while others may be derived from more modern customs or beliefs or reasons. Today there are birthstone lists for the Hour of day of birth, the Day of the of birth, and even the Season.
With a wide variety of choices from the various birthstone lists, hopefully everyone will be able to find their special symbol.
