The Ring Size Reality
Rings are usually round and easily measured, but our fingers are a complex shape made of flesh and bone. Different portions of our fingers have different dimensions, and thus deciding on a ring size is a little more complex than just simply measuring one point. Our knuckle (joints) tend to be the determining factor on what ring will fit on the finger, however, the ring should feel comfortable in the position it is worn and not be too loose.
Other factors also play a role. Fingers sizes can change with temperature, humidity, exercise, nutrition, time of day, hand dominance, pregnancy or health issues.
The best ring size is typically one that fits comfortably over the knuckle joint with a bit of resistance.
Note that wide rings typically should be slightly larger than narrow rings.
Special note for those who will be wearing rings for the first time. Rings should not be chosen that are too loose, as the fingers adjust to wearing a ring and then the ring will be too loose and easily fall off and get lost.

Determining Your Ring Size
Our advice is:
- If you have a jeweler measure you finger, check at another jeweler to maker sure there are no differences. Look at the measurement tool yourself, and note any other sizes on it, and ask what measurement system (British, USA, etc.) the sizing tool is based on. Also if you are planning on getting a wide ring, find a jeweler that has a set of wide sizing rings.
- Email us at ringsizer@XaGeJaCrystalJewelry.com for a link for a FREE download of a ring measurement strips. These measurement strips can be printed and can be cut out for easy measurement of your fingers.
- If you measure your own finger, use a piece of paper at least 1/4” (6mm) wide (or wider if you plan on a wide ring). Wrap it around you finger where it is comfortable, and not too tight. Mark the length and measure to determine the size. Use our chart to determine your ring size.
NOTE: Use the paper methods only as a guideline, as rings are round, and the paper will shape to your finger shape.
Ring Sizing Standards
There are number of ring size standards in use around the world. Two main categories of standards are whether the sizes are based on the diameter or the circumference. Most of the sizes are based on the metric system, however ring sizes in the USA (Canada) are based on the old American Inch (1.02”).

Caution on Charts, Measurements and Gauges There are many published lists of ring sizes, conversions, measurements and gauges that are not always in agreement. Discrepancies arise in the methods of measurement, quality of the measurement tools, and sometimes just honest mistakes. We have compiled our ring size chart after some extensive and conscientious research, which we use as the basis for all our jewelry.
